Aiite, so... we all know that the active user count around this place is minimal, at best. With low activity comes the availability of space for spam. Spam makes people leave. So, with that being said, we need to start taking a more active role in getting rid of those threads.

Mods: If your section has spam in it, please remove the threads. I know there aren't many of you around, but for those that are, please do your job.

Non-Mods: There is a an icon at the bottom right of each post that looks like Image. If you click that, it sends a message to the mods that there is something to be looked at. Please click this in any spam, or suspected spam, threads.

=====================================================================================

This is an attempt to help the site become a more inviting place. We need more activity, and not that of bots. Create threads. Respond to posts. Tell a friend about the site.

Best regards,
Management.

There are still a few of us. Just like there are still a few regular posters.

I PM'ed Morton about this like half a year ago. He didn't have time to reply back then and I think he just forgot.

here's my message:

I don't know if you know this, but I studied English a few years ago. In one of the classes I took, I had to interpret poems, which wasn't always as easy as it sounds; especially when I was reading older works. The language differed from what I was used to, both grammar wise, but also vocabulary wise, the imagery was hard to grasp at times, ...

Luckily there were some useful ades at my disposal: annoted versions of the poems, that gave insight to just those things (the vocabulary, the imagery, ... and so on).

Now here's the thing: whenever I read the lyrics to rap songs, I find that the good people who took the time to put them on paper, get some things wrong. They miss a few words here and there, screw up a metaphor, don't get a name quite right, ...

Wouldn't it be great if there were an archive (like OHHLA) with an explanation of the lyrics used in hip hop music?

I'm not only talking about explaning slang in a footnote, but also tackeling the lyrical aspect of the music we love (what do certain metaphors mean, why the change in rhyme schemes, ...).

But what would be the most interesting in my opinion: what's the background to a song? Why is a certain seemingly everyday phrase a diss? Who are these people mentioned in the song?

We could analyze the different aspects of each song:

- language (slang)
- imagery (what does he mean when he says ...)
- background

I think this could blow up, because as far as I know, this doens't exist yet.

Let me know what you think and if you're into this, how you see this happening

peace,

CllBll

I usually stay on top of removing the bot threads in my forums... seems to me they don't pop up as much as they did before.

Yeah, if you stay on top of your particular area, it doesn't seem that large of a problem. But, when you go through 5,6... 7,8 sections and they all have spam threads at the top, it looks horrid. Keep doing your thing, though, funk.

Well, do you mean you want the person who is writing the song to write what he meant by..."whatever", and explain why hes using the slang that he does? and the backround of the song? some just write for the hell of it, no real backround too it. they just write because they had an idea for a some and the idea spread.

I think its a good idea, but some might not even attempt it. but when I begin dropping lyrics and shit again, I will try it out, see how it works out.

Hip Hop is different from other types of music in the way it constantly refers to itself. samples are being used and re-used, people are being dissed or names are being called, ... I want people to understandhow complex this culture is.

Yeah, but still others are still being lazy regardless. Some will find it "idiotic" to have to explain there votes. Some of the forums I have looked at I have noticed the way they think. They say if you have to explain the lines it wasn't a good line. The people examining your drop should be able to understand what it is you're try to say, you know? they need to know what the point id you're trying to get across. Which is why I actually liked this forum more than others because most lines you actually didn't have to explain because the people that posted here could catch the point. Now that there is not many of those people posting anymore, i'm not exactly sure that is the case. Oh and in case any mods haven't seen, but I have used the warning button in a thread from the Red Carpet, spam about a site that I believe consisted of Viagra and some other dumb shit. Maybe someone can go and fix it, and perhaps if anyone's around I could become a mod as well. I'm sure some of the people that knew me from the past is still posting and probably think I am not "capable" of that position but I am not the same dude I was back than. Just an idea, I have been starting to come around again as you all can see, I have been posting and probably the most active within the past couple days or so.

The thread was deleted with MANY others. As well as the bots being banned.

I don't think Bill is talking about making these explanations for battles, though. Sounds more like he's attempting to compile a list of various songs, and do a Cliff's Notes version. I think alot of it would be quite funny to read. Why not just get it started, and see how it works out?

that's what I meant indeed.

For example:

Tupac parodied Junior M.A.F.I.A.'s lyrics ("Grab your dick if you love hip-hop, rub your titties if you love Big Papa") and changed them to "Grab your glocks when you see 2Pac, call the cops when you see 2Pac".
I would like to illustrate the beef between Tupac and Biggie (ending up in their death and the conspiracy theories that conme with it ) with their music.

This can be done by putting snippets from bith songs next to each other for the listener to compare.

After said explanation I would like to mention how Black Starralso refers to this in the song Defenition (again with a snippet).

See what I mean? Hip Hop is a network of reference. Listeners who don't know who Tupac was, or who don't know Junior Mafia, can never understand what Black Star was doing.

) as a lyrical threat to Biggie Smalls.

Black Star attempts to recreate this sound in their lyrics: “Say Hi-Tek, you’re ruling hip-hop. say J. Rawl, you’re ruling hip-hop.” Black Star attempts to call the listener’s attention to the legacies of hip-hop’s most prominent martyrs, while suggesting that Black Star is now "rulin’ hip-hop"
